Since Sarasota Memorial’s Level II Trauma Center opened in May 2015, the volume and complexity of seriously injured patients we treat has grown dramatically: from about 230 procedures in our first year to almost 1,000 surgical procedures a year.

Led by Matthew Klima, DO, FAOAO, our Orthopedic Trauma Services team treats a full spectrum of post-traumatic conditions, including fractures of the extremities, pelvis and acetabulum fractures, deformity correction, fractures involving joints, “problem” fractures, non-unions, revisions, and soft tissue defects with associated fractures.

“From surgeons and clinicians at the bedside to hospital leaders and supporters who equip us with life-saving tools, to families who play an integral role in patient recovery, our trauma success stories reflect the diligence and dedication of our entire team,” says Dr. Klima.

In addition to his work with the hospital’s trauma team, Dr. Klima also works with orthopedic surgeons in the area and accepts patient referrals for complex orthopedic conditions and procedures.

He has published and presented several studies on new surgical techniques and treatments for traumatic orthopedic injuries and serves as a faculty instructor for the AO Foundation (North America/Orthopaedic Trauma Division) and Orthopaedic Trauma Association.

Dr. Klima specializes in treating patients who have suffered traumatic orthopedic injuries, including:

  • Fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum, long bones and ribs
  • Peri-articular fractures, post traumatic limb salvage
  • Non-union of fractures, malunion of fractures, deformity correction
  • Soft tissue defects of the lower extremity and post-traumatic infections
